Assignments
Assignment 2: Identifying connotations
This assignment is about connotation and denotation.
Find and document examples of connotation and denotation in one of the videos listed below. These video are mostly product reviews, but they contain both denotational signs - facts, specifications, prices - messages for which the meanings are clear and agreed on, as well as connotational ones, for example, how the product suggests or connotes quality, cheapness, reliability, etc. Observe how the reviewer reacts - are they reaction to denotations - what the product is, its features and specifications, how it works - or connotations, what it suggests?
For example, James Hoffmann reviews both this coffemaker's denotational aspects - pressure, cost, speed, etc - as well as connotational ones - what thinks the packaging and design make him feel. Watch this video for inspiration, but you must choose a topic from the loist of videos below. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tuFQbiIVUkw
Watch this video for inspiration, but you must choose a topic from the loist of videos below.
For the video you choose, find three denotational messages - undisputed facts, clearly stated - and three connotational ones, impressions or suggestions, that the review notes.
Note the URL and title of the video, and provide a quick description (a few words or short sentence) plus a timestamp link - make sure your links go to the exact place in the video. Navigate to the correct place in the video and use the "start at" checkbox to go to that point - the video link will end with t=123 where 123 means 123 seconds into the video. Here's an example of a timestamo video.https://youtu.be/CDiSZiDsIZA?feature=shared&t=8
Send your results in a simply formatted Slack direct message. There is no need to create any sort of presentation document but make sure the message is cleanly formatted. Make sure to explore Slack's formatting tools, and consider sending a test message to yourself first.
As always, clarification before an assignment is due is better than problems after submission.
